Chapter Twenty-Four

Yamir

Knock.

Knock.

The soft rapping on my bedroom door let me know right away that it wasn’t Jett, because my sister would have just barged right on in. The only time she ever knocked was when she knew I was mad at her—and that wasn’t often. My sister was an airhead, unrepentant and self-centered, but I loved her crazy ass. She was my best friend.

Perking up with interest, I tossed my phone on the bed and yelled, “Come in.”

Shortly after, Naz walked inside with a quizzical look on his face. After the bomb he dropped on my ass, it should’ve been me wearing that expression. That was some heavy shit he’d hit me with in the living room. But with all the evidence piling up, it was impossible not to believe him.

This wasn’t some Michael Bay film, and all of the proof I needed was in that picture. I thought about showing it to Jett, but she wasn’t as open minded and accepting as I was. Who knew what her reaction would be if she found out the truth. Sometimes my sister could be so crass. It was better if we just kept this under wraps for now. Naz must have felt the same way because he made no attempt at trying to convince Jett either. To be honest, it would’ve just been a fruitless endeavor anyway.

“Aye, man, wassup?”

“Wuz poppin’, kid. I, uh, was hoping you could help me out with somethin’,” he said apprehensively. For some reason, he came off as nervous.

I quickly sat up. After the miracle he performed on me, I’d do just about anything to return the favor. “Sure. What do you need?”

“Help findin’ my lil’ girl,” he said, closing the door behind him. “With all this new technology, there’s gotta be a way to track down folks you lost touch with, right?”

“Facts. There’s Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram—”

“Yo, a chick mentioned Instagram to me earlier. Do you think you’d be able to find her on there?”

“I could try,” I said, climbing off my bed. I sat at my desk and connected my phone’s Screen Mirror to my laptop. I did this so that Naz could see everything I was doing on my iPhone on a bigger screen.

“First, let me open Instagram. I have to download it from the AppStore since I don’t have it on my phone. I don’t really fuck with social media like that, feel me.”

“Social what?”

“Social media. Interactive web-based platforms to converse with friends and like-minded people. Of course, that’s what it’s supposed to be used for, but people also use it for other shit.”

“Like what?” Naz asked confused.

“Bullying, body shaming, trolling.”

“Trolling? Fuck is that?”

I chuckled at his philistinism-like behavior. There was a dark and conflicted nature about him that I found really interesting. He was like an alien or foreign being, but he had clearly been here before. This nigga really don’t know shit about the new generation, I thought. It was pretty pathetic, but also kinda funny.

“Yo, you really don’t know anything about this new world we live in, huh?” I asked him.
